CRIME NEWS

  • A Knoxville man is facing felony charges after he broke into a home and fired at a woman Friday around 11 p.m. near Thomas Street—he stole $10,000 and a shotgun— police said.  WVLT 8
  • Knoxville police reported a 16-year-old was fatally shot early Monday morning on the 2500 block of Louise Avenue—officers found shell casings at the scene and are continuing their investigation for a suspect.  WVLT 8
  • Knox County DA Charme Allen reported that the 313 Initiative—launched in December 2022 by state and federal law enforcement with Michigan—has resulted in the seizure of 145.91 pounds of meth, 83.97 pounds of fentanyl and heroin, 7.5 pounds of cocaine, thousands of dosage units of MDMA and prescription pills, $794,057 and 251 guns across 453 arrests, and said the program helped reduce overdose deaths in Knox County from 485 in 2023 to 301 in 2024.  WVLT 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Knoxville will host the four-day Big Ears Festival from March 27 to March 30. Nearly 200 performances, film screenings beginning March 26, pop-up events and workshops are planned at historic theaters, churches and galleries—tickets sold out as of March 24.  10 News
  • Ijams Nature Center is hosting an exhibit that brings together art and environmental conservation — the display shows how creative works can focus on protecting nature.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TDOT announced that construction on Alcoa Highway caused rolling roadblocks from March 24 through Saturday between Woodson Drive and Cherokee Trail from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Crews will also flag the ramp at Cherokee Trail along Medical Center Way, and drivers are advised to plan for longer commutes — each roadblock lasts 20 minutes.  WVLT 8
  • Fourteen dogs with Knox County Sheriff's Office are set to receive bullet and stab-proof vests donated by Vested Interest in K9s—Inc. The vests will be delivered within ten weeks and one vest will mark the memory of Tucker Blakely sponsored by Lisa King.  6 News
  • Knoxville has switched from parking meters to a ParkMobile system that uses QR codes and an app in downtown, Old City and Fort Sanders. The city raised rates to $2 per hour in two-hour zones and will start issuing tickets on March 28 — drivers can get discount parking vouchers by proving income eligibility — so residents must check the app for time limits and costs.  Knoxville News Sentinel

  • Johnny Bullock, 62, of Caryville is seeking a new kidney after his brother’s donation lasted 28 years and he is now on dialysis three days a week—his sons cannot donate due to a history of kidney stones, and anyone interested is asked to contact living donor coordinator Larry Martin at 865-305-5340.  10 News
