COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, the historic Rule House in East Knoxville hosted a ribbon cutting that restored the 104-year-old home and launched the Anchor Program, which teaches life skills to adults with autism. The Grandiflora Foundation provided Autism Breakthrough a $1 annual lease for five years—supporting the program and honoring Dr. Rule's legacy.  6 News
  • On March 27th, demonstrators gathered on the University of Tennessee campus to hold a vigil for Mahmoud Khalil and support free speech. They carried signs and spoke in front of the College of Law building to express their views.  Knoxville News Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Anderson County crews and officials fought a 150-acre fire near Beech Grove Lane in Briceville and Rocky Top, which was 50% contained by Friday morning — Army helicopters dropped water and THP controlled traffic on Main Street. Local authorities confirmed that no buildings were damaged and no injuries were reported.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Knoxville pilot Rob Spicer warned that bright laser strikes during landing can distract and impair a pilot’s vision—Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed a law on Friday that makes such actions a Class B misdemeanor effective July 1 with fines up to $250,000.  WVLT 8
  • This weekend, the Tennessee Department of Transportation scheduled road work and lane closures across 24 counties that may delay drivers in East Tennessee. Downtown Knoxville streets will be closed from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Sunday—Big Ears brings extra pedestrian traffic in the area.  6 News

  • At Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center on Thursday, the University of Tennessee swim team won two NCAA titles. Jordan Crooks won the 50-yard freestyle in 17.91 seconds and the team set a record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:12.84—bringing their total to 48 national titles.  10 News
  • Today, the Tennessee Vols beat Kentucky 78-65 in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 round—marking the first time the teams met in the tournament. They will face the winner of the Purdue and Houston game in Indianapolis on Sunday.  10 News
