COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The USDA canceled twenty-one tractor-tailer loads of food for East Tennessee on March 24—$722,000 worth of commodities and more than 377,000 lbs of protein and dairy were affected. Second Harvest said families relying on its programs may face shortages as it works to replace the missing shipments.  6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Over the weekend, Keep Knoxville Beautiful distributed more than 500 native tree seedlings in Knoxville as part of Tennessee Tree Day, offering 12 species including Eastern Red Budd, Elderberry, Pecan and Tulip Poplar— the state tree. Residents plan to plant the seedlings to improve air quality, reduce noise and support groundwater.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cocke County Mayor Rob Mathis announced on March 31 that he is running for re-election—he said his top priorities are filling jobs and reducing unemployment after the county suffered severe flooding from Helene in 2024.  6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Angel Flight Soars has provided free flights for patients in need of medical care for over 40 years by connecting them with volunteer pilots. Knoxville pilot Jimmy Stone has completed 31 missions in his Robinson R44 helicopter, and the nonprofit has flown over 66,000 missions across the Southeast — serving patients, families and caregivers in critical condition.  10 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a loss to Houston in the Elite Eight on March 30, Tennessee basketball ended its season with seniors Zakai Zeigler and Jahmai Mashack retiring after four years on the team. The pair won an SEC regular-season title and a tournament championship — leaving a legacy as Zeigler said he will always call Knoxville home forever.  10 News
  • The Knoxville Smokies revealed their two new bear mascots, Knox (named after Knoxville and Knox County) and Jackson (named after 500 E Jackson Ave) at Covenant Health Park on Monday. They also announced the return of former mascot Smokie Joe as the team gears up to start the season on April 15 against the Chattanooga Lookouts.  10 News
  • The Knoxville Smokies baseball team and One Knox soccer club are teaming up to offer a package with tickets for five home games each at the new Covenant Health Park for $230 — the deal comes with hats from both teams. The Smokies will open on April 15 and One Knox will begin on April 26, with game day street closures set to manage traffic.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • Downtown Knoxville will host runners this weekend in the Covenant Kids Run and the Knoxville Marathon. The kids’ one-mile race will begin Saturday at 5:30 p.m. on Clinch Avenue Bridge and finish in World's Fair Park—followed by a 5K at 7 p.m.—while the marathon will start Sunday at 7:30 a.m. with finishers receiving medals, event shirts, goody bags and certificates and half marathon finishers qualifying for the Boston Marathon.  10 News
  • UT announced that Lady Vols coach Kim Caldwell signed a one-year extension to remain with the team until March 31, 2030—after leading them to 24 wins and a Sweet 16 appearance. Caldwell expressed gratitude for her team and staff, and full contract details will be released later.  10 News
