COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Second Harvest Food Bank said the USDA canceled 21 loads of food worth $722,200 that were to be delivered from today through July; the move will affect families in 18 counties as food demand jumped 20%. Officials noted funding for the Commodities Credit Corporation remains paused—raising concerns that fewer food supplies will reach those in need.  10 News
  • More than 150 people were sworn in as American citizens on Tuesday at Knoxville City County Building on Main Street in a ceremony led by Judge Suzanne H. Bauknight—families felt the culmination of years of dedication—while several new citizens looked forward to voting.  WVLT 8
  • Candace Boone-Viox, owner of the popular Water into Wine in West Knoxville, supports the community by donating a trailer to the Shepherd of Hope Food Pantry, building beds for children through a Rotary project, hosting a Bible study, and mentoring teen moms. She was named a Remarkable Woman finalist and will join 125 other women in Hollywood for a networking event.  6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Knoxville police reported a nearly 50% increase in DUI arrests so far this year — 148 incidents were recorded, including 79 in March.  10 News

  • Eleventh-grader Jayveion Morgan from Carter High School worked with his football and soccer teammates to plan a promposal on the school field for his longtime friend Myra Beth. He surprised her with a Reese’s chocolate-themed poster board and candy bouquet after they met in eighth grade through a peer tutoring program (CDC), and she accepted.  WVLT 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nine Tennessee death row inmates filed a lawsuit on March 14 challenging the state’s plan to resume lethal injections with the single drug pentobarbital—lawyers claim it may cause unnecessary pain and that proper changes have not been made. The Tennessee Supreme Court will schedule executions for four inmates in May, though further legal challenges could delay the process.  WVLT 8
  • State lawmakers passed a bill to improve how school districts notify parents about credible threats — the measure requires districts to alert parents within 48 hours and report incident numbers quarterly — and it now awaits Gov. Bill Lee’s signature.  6 News
  • Law enforcement agencies statewide launched Operation Hands Free Tuesday to enforce laws against distracted driving as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month—agencies including highway patrol, safety office, and transportation will issue fines starting at $50 with higher penalties in work and school zones. Statistics show a distracted-driving crash occurred every 42 minutes, and the effort aims to reduce these incidents.  6 News
  • The Senate passed a vape regulation bill on Monday afternoon that adds a 10% tax on some vape products and creates a directory of FDA-authorized items in the Volunteer State. Sen. Ken Yager said the measure aims to protect children from vaping—while it is set to raise more than $16 million for the state’s general fund.  6 News
