CRIME NEWS

  • On Feb 12, ICE detained three residents at the Prosperity Drive check-in facility even though they had no criminal charges; families now worry about future appointments as unexpected office closures (on Feb 19, March 19, and March 26) have disrupted scheduled check-ins (leaving relatives unsure of next steps).  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • A Knoxville man was sentenced to 36 years in prison without parole for second-degree murder after a fatal shooting on Broadway Viaduct on May 3, 2023—witnesses said he was seen with the 25-year-old victim Travis Brown before fleeing the scene.  6 News
  • Gary Wayne Sutton has been on death row since 1996 in Tennessee and the state is set to resume executions—Sutton says he feels as if death is closing in on him.  10 News
  • Jayshawn Williams—a Knoxville career criminal with nearly 20 years of arrests—was sentenced to 36 years in prison after a Knox County jury convicted him of second-degree murder for fatally shooting Travis Brown on Broadway Viaduct in May 2023.  10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Girls on the Run is a national nonprofit that helps girls from 3rd to 8th grade learn to run and build confidence at Maynard Elementary School — where they practice weekly lessons for a 5K race. The race will take place on May 17 as the program helps the participants overcome fear and grow stronger.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Over 150 immigrants from 50 countries became American citizens at a naturalization ceremony held Tuesday morning in Knoxville + Chief Bankruptcy Judge Suzanne H. Bauknight presided while Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs delivered opening remarks.  6 News
  • TVA announced that on April 9, Don Moul will become president and CEO with a new base salary of $1.2 million, and the board has reversed last year’s cap on maximum CEO payments—his total compensation will be set by formulas based on industry surveys and performance targets.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • A $75,000 donation from the Downtown Knoxville Alliance is funding the city's plan to install new trash compactors in downtown to replace smelly garbage carts; the first will be installed near Jackson Avenue and Central Street in the next few months—this system is expected to save $170,000 a year in labor costs.  6 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • On April 1, Knoxville Smokies players walked into their new downtown stadium at Covenant Health Park and said every detail made them feel like they were in the big leagues—seeing the red and blue lighting and mountain views that impressed them. The team will have its home opener on April 15 with Will Sanders as the starting pitcher—bringing fresh hope for a strong season in a facility built with retail and dining spaces along East Jackson Ave.  Knoxville News Sentinel
