COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Federal spending cuts left empty shelves at Second Harvest Food Bank—East Tennessee's largest food bank—after the USDA cancelled 21 shipments worth $722K at the end of March. The food bank asked local donors for help while the USDA did not respond to questions about its review process.  WVLT 8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Eight dogs died in a house fire on Old Rutledge Pike Thursday morning (near Three Points Road) as crews arrived around 10:30 a.m. and halted heavy flames that severely damaged the home (which sheltered ten dogs—with only two rescued—and involved one person being treated at a nearby hospital).  WVLT 8

CRIME NEWS

  • A Farragut man was charged after deputies removed a camera from a women's restroom in a Farragut park — the device was discovered after a woman said she saw something unusual in the ceiling.  10 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Knoxville’s Dogwood Arts Festival will begin on April 25 and run through April 27 at World’s Fair Park. The event will feature 100 artists, 38 live performances, interactive workshops, up-and-coming artist booths, plus food trucks and craft beer.  WVLT 8

  • WVLT caught up with Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon to discuss her administration's current strategies and future plans for the city. She explained how she will address key community challenges—offering essential insight into upcoming initiatives.  WVLT 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Oak Ridge Animal Shelter closed after four dogs were diagnosed with distemper—a contagious disease that attacks dogs’ respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems. Officials said the shelter will remain closed until further notice as they work to control the spread.  WVLT 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • A new bill may cut funding for the TSSAA if it blocks student athletes from transferring at least once. Lawmakers say the measure will reduce public funding for high school sports and may change eligibility rules.  10 News
