  • The downtown YWCA building — built a century ago with a pool, kitchen, and rooms for residents — is undergoing renovations to add more resident rooms, bathrooms, and laundry facilities, with the work set to finish in October.  Knoxville News Sentinel

CRIME NEWS

  • Knoxville police charged three individuals with second-degree murder for the overdose deaths of two people—including an 18-year-old—at a Fountain City sober living facility.  10 News
  • On April 9, a grand jury indicted Savannah Stanley on two counts of vehicular homicide and three counts of vehicular assault after a head-on collision on April 14, 2024, that killed 21-year-old Kylie Veronica Roberto—the daughter of a Knoxville councilman—and injured three others, with court documents noting her intoxication contributed to the crash.  6 News
  • Knoxville police arrested 42-year-old Willie Tolbert—wanted for attempted first-degree murder, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and other weapon charges—after a 12-day search that followed an April 9 incident behind a home on Brooks Avenue where he fired shots at two men.  WVLT 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 64th Dogwood Arts Festival will take place at World's Fair Park from April 25 to April 27 and will feature over 100 art vendors, live music, entertainment and children's activities. Visitors can join hands-on workshops for $10 each and a free cartoon meet-and-greet on Saturday at 3 p.m.  10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Middle schoolers on the all-girls Gadget Girls team at West Valley Middle School build and code LEGO robots and share a strong sense of sisterhood as they work on challenges for the FIRST LEGO League—after placing third in the state competition, they will show off their skills and raise funds on May 3 before competing internationally in June at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.  Knoxville News Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Tennessee Department of Transportation warns drivers to slow down and move over during National Work Zone Awareness Week—34 truck collisions have put workers at risk this year. A memorial of 113 orange barrels honors fallen employees near I-640, and drivers will be able to show support tomorrow by wearing orange.  WVLT 8

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Knoxville leaders cut the ribbon on Riverside at Holston—a 96-unit affordable housing community on River Willow Way across from Holston River Park—on Thursday, offering housing for residents with incomes up to 80% of the area median. The development features accessible units, a clubhouse, a playground, and other amenities, and applicants can contact the Community Development Corporation or DGA Residential to apply.  10 News
  • Knoxville-Knox County Design Review Board approved design plans in February for a seven-story mixed-use building at 207 E. Jackson Avenue that will include apartments, street-level retail space, at least 450 parking spaces, and EV charging stations + a separate plan for a five-story apartment building at 301 E. Jackson Avenue; project representatives said planned streetscape improvements on Jackson Avenue may affect the timeline.  6 News
