COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Knoxville has many local events planned this week from today through April 29th, featuring art workshops at Ijams Nature Center, concerts at the Tennessee Theatre + outdoor festivals at World's Fair Park that give residents fresh ways to enjoy culture and nature. Multiple venues host these family-friendly activities so residents can choose from concerts, nature hikes and more.  10 News
  • Volunteers from Pilot Company as part of the new Miles of Good program worked at Inskip Elementary School on Wednesday morning—planting new garden plants, picking up trash and also helping at the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center. The initiative follows a donation of nearly $5.6 million and 2,800 volunteer hours given last year to support local community projects.  6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Knoxville police said a black Jeep was found flipped on its side and burning on North Broadway—its passenger was ejected and died at the scene while another individual was charged with DUI.  10 News
  • Knoxville police said calls came in around midnight for a rollover crash on North Broadway where a black Jeep flipped and burned after a Kia pulled out from a nearby Kenjo gas station—resulting in a 22-year-old passenger being killed and driver William Gavigan, who was under the influence, taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.  WVLT 8
  • The Knoxville Police Department reported 49 firearms were stolen from cars by April 20—nearly double last year's 26—and urged residents to lock vehicles and secure keys to help prevent further thefts.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Knox County Schools will vote on a $700.1 million budget proposal on April 29 at 5 p.m. in the Summer Place board room— the plan allocates $33.8 million for school nutrition and $24.4 million for capital improvements, replaces the Night Alternative Program with virtual learning, reduces various staff positions, and sets new salary schedules for teachers.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Tennessee Valley Authority has reapplied — following updated DOE criteria — for an $800 million grant to speed up building the country’s first Small Modular Reactor at the Clinch River Nuclear Site and is working with GE Hitachi, Ontario Power Generation and Synthos Green Energy on its design. The TVA plans to submit its construction permit application by summer and may begin site preparation as soon as 2026.  6 News
