- ➤ Jarnigan and Sons Mortuary remains a trusted service in Knoxville, having cared for local families for over 100 years—making it the oldest Black-owned business in the city. 10 News
- ➤ On Thursday, a memorial was held at Alex Haley Heritage Square to honor former WBIR anchor Edye Ellis—who died in March and paved the way for Black on-air talent. Attendees recalled her contributions to Knoxville—her legacy continues to inspire the community. 10 News
- ➤ A public memorial was held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Alex Haley statue at Alex Haley Heritage Square—honoring Edye Ellis, WBIR’s first Black anchor who died March 3 in a Chicago nursing home at 81—and celebrated her legacy as a pioneering role model in Knoxville and beyond. 10 News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ NamUs is a federal online database that helps track missing, unidentified, and unclaimed persons using reports from law enforcement. It holds over 25,500 long-term cases nationwide, including 228 in East Tennessee, and was set up in 2007 to support cold case work & forensic testing. 6 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Knox County Schools has proposed a $700.5 million budget that is 3.1% higher than last year—$19.7 million of which is for staff salaries and benefits. The district expects about 500 fewer students in fiscal 2026 and will vote on the proposal April 29 while the County Commission holds its meeting in May or June. 6 News
- ➤ Knox County Board of Education will meet Tuesday at 5 p.m. to review a $700.5 million budget that invests $19.7 million in teacher salaries and increases funding for school nutrition, transportation, and student support positions. The proposal follows a new pay scale for the Teacher Paycheck Protection Act and cuts 23.5 district office positions — a move aimed at preserving classroom funding amid reductions in pandemic dollars — to focus resources on students. - ➤ State applications for Helene recovery funding opened on Monday as part of the $100 million Response and Recovery Fund to help with disaster relief after Tropical Storm Helene. Local governments, non-profit organizations, businesses, farmers and foresters in (Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington) counties can apply before the May 31 deadline. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Kyle Blassingame, an amputee and former two-sport college athlete who survived a near-fatal car crash, now works at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital to inspire young patients with his journey in occupational therapy. He lost his leg from an infection after the accident—showing children that they can overcome hard challenges. WVLT 8
- ➤ East Tennessee Children’s Hospital opened its new Family Plaza on April 24th to enhance patient safety by providing a secure crossing along 21st Street between the hospital’s North Tower, Koppel Plaza and Medical Offices building — a design that replaces the unsafe route — for safer access by patients.
