  • Former Knoxville educator and philanthropist Lula Powell passed away peacefully on April 22 at 94 after more than 40 years in the school system—she was the first female principal at Green Elementary School, and a homegoing celebration will be held on April 28 at Rogers Memorial Baptist Church at 4 p.m.  10 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Sevierville man Buddy Livesay was sentenced Friday to 10-year jail after a short police chase ended in a crash on Edington Road in South Knoxville on June 21st, 2024 - he fled on his motorcycle using a fake identity, was found with two handguns, and had a prior felony aggravated kidnapping conviction in Indiana.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Christian Academy of Knoxville held its prom (April 26) at The Lighthouse in West Knoxville, where students celebrated the night; photos show them dressed up and enjoying the event.  Knoxville News Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The spotted lanternfly, an invasive species from Asia, has been seen this spring in Tennessee, and officials urge residents to photograph+report any sightings and to destroy any insects+egg masses to slow its spread.  Knoxville News Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sevier County and the cities of Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Pittman Center are joining with state and federal partners to create a Community Wildfire Protection Plan that will lower wildfire risk. Risk assessments will go on until mid-2025 + tailored action plans will be ready by fall with the final plan released early next year.  10 News

  • On April 26, One Knoxville Soccer Club hosted its first home game at Covenant Health Park in the Old City. A block party on Central Street offered food, games, and live music—drawing local fans before the match.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • Tennessee wide receiver Dont'e Thornton was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the fourth round after leading the Vols with 661 receiving yards and 6 touchdown catches — he played in all 13 games last season and began his college career with the Oregon Ducks.  10 News
