CRIME NEWS

  • Edward Kelley, who was pardoned for joining the Jan. 6 insurrection, still faces a life sentence in Tennessee for plotting to kill FBI and other law enforcement agents+ his sentencing is set for July 2.  10 News
  • A Netflix documentary titled A Deadly American Marriage examines whether Knoxville woman Molly Martens and her father pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the 2015 killing of Jason Corbett in self-defense—featuring family interviews and set to stream May 9.  10 News
  • A Knoxville man faced charges after police searched a home on Gillespie Avenue Thursday and found about 21 grams of suspected meth, over three grams of suspected heroin and fentanyl, two handguns, three rifles and a motorcycle — he was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon, possessing a firearm during a dangerous felony, and with drug and theft offenses.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tate's School in the Cedar Bluff area is rebuilding after an EF-2 tornado in 2023 destroyed buildings and knocked down over 100 trees—restoration efforts are underway to repair the campus.  10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to 23 snake species, including two venomous ones—timber rattlesnakes and northern copperheads—that require immediate medical care if they bite, and hikers should stay alert and calmly move away if they see a snake. If bitten, visitors must call 911 and follow first aid steps until help arrives.  Knoxville News Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Knoxville City Council is reviewing its new 2025-2026 budget proposal — the plan allocates $477.3 million to city services and includes $1.8 million in grant funds for housing projects with the Youth Action Board. The budget will return on May 27 after legislative and public hearings.  10 News
  • Authorities enforced distracted driving laws throughout April to reduce risks on Knoxville roads. Knoxville Police and partner agencies conducted patrols and outreach + their efforts focused on keeping the streets safe for everyone.  WVLT 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Webb School sophomore, Ananya Nair, was recognized last week by the American Heart Association for raising $83,405 and ranking third among 177 teens nationwide—earning her the Teen of Impact title. She will continue working with the organization to improve heart health.  WVLT 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Covenant Health Park hosted its first One Knox SC game after crews changed the baseball field into a soccer pitch, and the team broke the USL League One attendance record with over 6,300 fans. Manager Drew McKenna said fans and players enjoyed the better facilities and professional game-day experience — a sign that the park is ready for more soccer matches.  10 News
