COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tennessee Basketball student-athlete Jahmai Mashack was honored Tuesday morning with an advocacy award for his work with Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee—his efforts including virtual food drives and on-the-ground volunteering helped provide nearly 200,000 meals to families in need. He plans to continue giving back to the community as he moves forward after graduating from the University of Tennessee.  10 News
  • A nonprofit is holding a four-week spring session that pairs teens from residential treatment facilities with shelter dogs like Sonny and Rose to build skills and confidence, while the dogs learn basic commands for adoption. The program, known as H.A.L.T. (Humans and Animals Learning Together), has helped more than 1,500 young people and 500 dogs since 1987.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • Market Square Farmers’ Market will open for its 22nd season on Saturday, May 3 in downtown Knoxville and will run every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through November; the market will also offer programs such as SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks, Nourish Kids, and Nourish Moves.  WVLT 8

  • On April 26, comedian Shane Gillis set a new record in Knoxville at Food City Center — drawing over 16,000 people and eclipsing the turnout from Kevin Hart. He is now on a 28-city international tour and his sitcom 'Tires' will debut on Netflix in June.  10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced that the annual synchronous firefly viewing at Elkmont will run from May 29 to June 5. Lottery applications open May 2 at 10 a.m. EST and close May 5 at 11:59 p.m. EST with a $1 fee per entry—each successful application will allow one vehicle with up to seven occupants.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Denzel Grant, executive director of Turn Up Knox, announced his candidacy for District 6 City Council and criticized the city's decision to end its youth violence prevention contract. He said his campaign will focus on reducing violence, affordable housing, and fairness for East Knoxville as he will face SEEED founder Stan Johnson with primaries on August 26+the general election on November 4.  6 News

  • Joey Aguilar—a UCLA transfer with one season of eligibility and 6,760 passing yards with 56 touchdowns from Appalachian State—announced his commitment Tuesday to play quarterback for Tennessee and said he is ready to work hard at Rocky Top. He moved from UCLA after a roster change opened the door for his return to a school steeped in winning traditions.  10 News
