COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday, May 10, Knoxville residents can donate nonperishable food items by leaving them in a yellow 'Stamp Out Hunger' bag or container at their mailbox for USPS workers to pick up & deliver to FISH Hospitality Pantries, which helps support about 9,000 local families each month. If donations are not left on Saturday, USPS will continue to collect them on Monday & boost the food drive. WVLT 8
- ➤ Today, free live music returns to downtown Knoxville as Concerts on the Square launches with Jazz Tuesday featuring Margherita Fava and the Knoxville Jazz Workshop. The events will run on Tuesdays in May, June and September and on Third Thursdays from May through September from 7–9 p.m., and attendees should bring their own chairs. WVLT 8
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Rural Metro Fire rescued an injured hiker stuck on a trail near East Raccoon Valley Road around 11:30 a.m. on May 5 by hiking one mile through steep terrain and using a wheeled stokes basket—from recent training on House Mountain—to stabilize and transport the hiker down the mountain. 6 News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 20-year-old Powell woman, Dsani Badgett, was charged with first-degree murder after fatally shooting her boyfriend, Stephen Morgan, on Weaver Hollow Way Saturday—she claimed she found evidence of his Yahoo account cheating and fired when he tried to grab a gun from their nightstand. WVLT 8
- ➤ A North Knox County woman was arrested for fatally shooting her lover after an argument over his alleged infidelity—deputies arrived around 5:40 p.m. Saturday after hearing her calls for help and later charged her with first-degree murder. 10 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Knox County students will have at least 40 minutes of recess each day starting July 1 under a new state law — district leaders are reviewing school schedules to ensure all elementary schools comply with the rule. WVLT 8
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs presented the Fiscal Year 2025-2026 budget at the Main Assembly Room in downtown Knoxville on May 5—he outlined spending plans and priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. Knoxville News Sentinel
- ➤ City officials approved a $1.9 million contract with Blalock & Sons Inc. on April 24 to repair the Gay Street Bridge after it closed in June for safety, and work using barges will start in May/June—repairs are expected to finish by the end of the year to let pedestrians, bicyclists, emergency vehicles, and transit buses use the structure.
