BUSINESS NEWS

  • Food City is hosting several Gas n’ Go pop-up events to celebrate Dollywood’s 40th season by giving the first 40 customers free park tickets and a chance to win a $50 gift card. The events are scheduled for Knoxville on May 13 (4 to 6 p.m.), Seymour on May 15 (4 to 6 p.m.), Powell on May 20 (4 to 6 p.m.), and Alcoa on May 22 (4 to 6 p.m.).  WVLT 8

CRIME NEWS

  • A new video shows a surviving dog after a deliberate act of animal cruelty in Knoxville—officials say the incident is under investigation.  10 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Knoxville is set for a busy week of events starting today through May 13 with theater shows, music festivals and sports games planned across the city — events like '12 Dancing Princesses' at the Knoxville Children's Theatre, Moulin Rouge! at the Tennessee Theatre, and a Smokies game on May 13 offer a range of family-friendly entertainment. Community celebrations continue with art walks, live concerts and a Mother's Day festival at Kern's Food Hall providing options for all tastes.  10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ijams Nature Center received $50,000 from state funding to make Serendipity Trail accessible for people with disabilities—Rep. Elaine Davis helped secure the support from the General Assembly for the project.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beginning Wednesday, travelers using a driver’s license at McGhee Tyson Airport needed a REAL ID-compliant form of identification, and TSA officials said a paper copy alone was not accepted — extra screening occurred if older IDs were used. Officials advised arriving three hours early — a step to prevent delays.  10 News
  • High school students in Knoxville can apply now through May 31 to join Mayor Indya Kincannon’s Youth Council, which gives youth a chance to help shape local policy and decision making. Those selected will begin serving in August—meeting monthly to learn about government structure and work on issues such as homelessness, violence prevention, civic engagement, sustainability, and mental health and trauma.  WVLT 8

  • Zoo Knoxville’s longtime resident Big Al the tortoise is leaving his winter home to greet guests as his keeper Heather Debord, who has cared for him since her first class field trip, helps move him (525 pounds and needing seven people) to his summer exhibit. He is known for holding his breath for long periods and showing friendly, playful behavior that delights visitors.  WVLT 8

  • University of Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy announced Tuesday he will medically retire from football to focus on his long-term health and his non-profit Huddle for Hearts—he returned last season after an ankle injury. He finished the 2024 season with 39 catches, 472 yards and two touchdowns.  10 News
