CRIME NEWS

  • Knoxville Police Department officials now charge drug dealers with second degree murder when they are tied to an overdose death— a move by a countywide task force aimed at deterring drug suppliers.  WVLT 8
  • Knox County authorities arrested 37-year-old William August Gilbert on Wednesday for aggravated child abuse after he allegedly pushed a 6-year-old boy's face into a wall and hit him during a welfare check at a home in Mascot, and he is now charged with violating residence and work restrictions tied to his prior child sexual abuse conviction in Wisconsin.  10 News
  • Today, Netflix is releasing a documentary titled A Deadly American Marriage that examines a decade-old murder case involving Farragut family members Thomas and Molly Martens, who pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter after Jason Corbett died and later returned to Knoxville in 2024—The film probes questions of self-defense and the legal battles that followed.  10 News

  • Cattywampus Puppet Council will hold its 8th Annual Parade and Block Party on May 18 at Suttree Landing Park from 2 to 6 p.m. The free event, themed Our Joy is Powerful, will feature a people-powered parade starting at 3 p.m. and creative storytelling for everyone.  Knoxville News Sentinel

  • A recent report found disparities in special education programming at Knox County Schools—almost one in every six students lives with a disability.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A letter from the Department of Transportation (DOT) sent on April 24 warned Knoxville officials that failing to drop certain diversity, equity, and inclusion practices could risk federal funding for a planned $60 million pedestrian bridge connecting Clancy Avenue with downtown near the University. City officials said they are talking with lawmakers to protect the funding already awarded for the project.  10 News
  • The Emerald Youth Foundation lost 70 part-time AmeriCorps workers in Knoxville after federal funding for its CAC AmeriCorps program was cut — the change will cost about $500,000 to replace and affects afterschool programs for children.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • Yesterday morning, Knoxville government crews moved a repair barge under Gay Street Bridge to serve as a platform for repairing the 127-year-old structure. The repairs must be finished by December 31 with a contract cap of $1,944,929.50—after which the bridge will reopen only for pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles while plans are in place to replace it in five to 10 years.  6 News
