CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A federal grand jury in Knoxville indicted 27-year-old Regan Darby Prater for allegedly firebombing the Highlander Center in New Market on March 29 — he pleaded not guilty after being accused of using an explosive and spray-painting a symbol linked to a WWII-era group. WVLT 8
- ➤ On Monday, a head-on collision on Millertown Pike killed 25-year-old electrician Jacob Saunders-Lashley, whose wife was expecting their first child this Fall — 20-year-old Mason Shumate was driving under the influence. WVLT 8
- ➤ Knox County DA Charme Allen recused her office on May 6 from investigating allegations that Trustee Justin Biggs and staff misused taxpayer funds for luxury hotel stays and personal trips using trustee-leased vehicles—if state watchdog findings warrant charges, Blount County DA Ryan Desmond will handle the prosecutions. - ➤ Greenheck Group broke ground on Friday at a 330-acre site off the Midway exit in Knoxville, promising 440 high-paying jobs and investing $5 million in local schools — including $2 million for Carter High School. The new plant, featuring two large factories and office space, will open in fall — boosting local economic growth. 10 News

- ➤ Public Consulting Group released a study on Special Education in Knox County Schools using data, classroom observations, focus groups, and surveys from nearly 2,000 staff and 1,100 parents. The report found that while the preschool inclusion model and academic scores are strong, disparities in student labeling—especially for Black students—and shortages in key roles such as school psychologists remain a challenge. 10 News
- ➤ A new chemistry building is planned at UT with a record 165.5 million dollars state investment to provide a unified space for classes and research. Groundbreaking will begin in September and construction is expected to finish in 2029 (the facility will include modern labs, lecture halls, and research spaces) (supporting growth in Tennessee’s polymer science program). - ➤ Greenheck Group began a $2M five-year partnership with Carter High School and nonprofit Engineering Tomorrow on Friday at Midway Business Park to give students hands-on experience in real-world engineering. The program (using over 20 labs) will build a workforce pipeline (focusing on practical skills) for future job opportunities. 6 News
