CRIME NEWS

  • Knoxville police said a suspect speeding after a traffic stop caused a head-on crash Monday at 7:45 p.m. in which four people were injured and taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center — Bryant Page now faces charges including aggravated assault and weapon possession.  WVLT 8
  • A Sevierville man, 19-year-old Jonathan Matthew Jones, was arrested on two counts of aggravated animal cruelty after he strangled a pit bull and hit a husky with a hammer on Pullen Road Saturday as deputies found the husky with cuts on its face and blood coming from its mouth — animal control removed the injured dogs.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Federal student loan borrowers experienced scam calls—some receiving more than 25 calls—after the government announced late April it would resume collections on over 42 million loans, and experts advised borrowers to block unknown calls and contact their loan provider directly.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 13th, Knoxville City Council approved a new violence interruption contract with the National Institute of Criminal Justice Reform during a meeting at the City-County Building downtown. Local leaders such as Turn Up Knox executive director Denzel Grant expressed support—after a two-week delay in reaching the decision.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • ICE detentions at Knox County Jail jumped to 370 in April—a rise of 319 from last April—records show, and Professor Meghan Conley said the increase reflected changes in enforcement policies rather than more local crimes. Data tracked from January confirmed that the numbers doubled before April, highlighting the impact of the administration’s shifted priorities.  10 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Smoky Mountain Service Dogs, an East TN nonprofit, is expanding its work to help military veterans and first responders cope with post-traumatic stress by pairing them with trained service dogs—these dogs aid with mobility and anxiety. The group has provided more than 70 service dogs, including York, a 6-year-old Yellow Labrador who supports veteran Bryan Gross with his daily challenges.  10 News
  • Today, the state veterinarian warns animal owners of the invasive New World Screwworm pest that can cause painful wounds on livestock, pets and other warm-blooded animals — recent detections in Mexico raise concerns over its spread due to Tennessee’s travel corridors. Owners are urged to check their animals for non-healing wounds and signs of infection — early detection is key to containing the threat.  WVLT 8

  • Former Tennessee edge runner James Pearce Jr. signed a four-year fully guaranteed rookie contract with the Atlanta Falcons worth $16.8 million—he also received an $8.8 million signing bonus after being selected 26th in the NFL Draft and skipped his senior season.  10 News
