COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Knoxville offers a full week of events from today to May 20 that includes yoga at the McClung Museum, a candlelight Adele tribute at Jackson Terminal, and Smokies games at Covenant Health Park, with theater, music, festivals, and outdoor activities also planned—providing local residents with varied, family-friendly fun. The events span art, sports, and cultural shows across multiple venues in our community.  10 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A tractor trailer overturned between the west and east lanes of I-40 near Strawberry Plains on May 14th — no injuries were reported as police and fire officials advised drivers to avoid the area.  6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Knox County Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday for a $43.7M new elementary school in Farragut that will serve about 1,400 K-5 students—with features including 68 classrooms, a gym, and a storm shelter. The 130,000-square-foot building on Village Commons Boulevard is expected to be completed before the start of the 2027-28 school year.  WVLT 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Knoxville City Council approved a $1M project to build a new greenway along North Broadway with sidewalk and crossing improvements at Woodland Avenue. The project will break ground next year—city leaders plan to extend it to Adair Park in Fountain City.  10 News
  • Knoxville City Council approved a year-long contract with the National Institute of Criminal Justice Reform to run a violence interruption program—staffing five messengers to work on the streets. The $826,800 contract fills the gap left after the Turn Up Knox program ended and may be replaced by a local community partner.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • On Wednesday, FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program paid $15.1 million to Tennessee policyholders for damage from storm Helene with over 83% of the claims coming from high-risk flood areas.  WVLT 8
  • The University of Tennessee’s Institute for Public Service will receive recurring $2 million to create a local planning agency that will help Tennessee cities and counties with economic development, zoning and infrastructure planning. UT Extension will launch a statewide landowner education program and the agency will begin operations in July—local governments had sought this support after state planning officers closed in 2011.  10 News

  • This May, for National Water Safety Month, All Knox Swim is teaching that wearing Coast Guard-approved life jackets and keeping a close eye on swimmers are key to preventing drowning—founder Thomas Cochran advises parents to use touch supervision by staying within arms' reach.  WVLT 8
