COMMUNITY NEWS

  • HonorAir’s 36th flight — run by Eddie Mannis since 2007 — brought East Tennessee veterans to Washington D.C. to visit memorials built to honor their service and share their experiences. The free program lets veterans see monuments they might not have been able to visit on their own.  WVLT 8

CRIME NEWS

  • Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones said a serial vehicle burglar broke into several cars in Sweetwater on May 16, stealing valuables including a child's flute needed for band events as part of eight related break-ins while the sheriff’s office and Sweetwater Police ask anyone with video evidence to come forward.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grace Christian Academy held its Class of 2025 graduation ceremony on May 18 at Grace Baptist Church in Knoxville—photos from the event show the graduates' proud moments.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • The Knox County Board of Education is asking for public input on its five-year strategic plan that will set district goals including graduation rates — work experience and academic targets. Parents and community members are invited to fill out a survey to help shape the priorities for local schools.  WVLT 8

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency rescued three orphaned bear cubs in Sullivan County after their mother—a sow black bear—was hit and killed along Highway 19E on Sunday around 7 a.m. The cubs, each weighing about 12 pounds and able to climb trees, were evaluated before being released into a remote section of the Cumberland Mountains while officials urged drivers to remain alert to wildlife crossings.  WVLT 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said eight people died on state waterways this year and urged boaters to follow safety laws during National Safe Boating Awareness Week—May 17 to May 23—to help prevent further tragedies. Boaters must register their vessels, wear life jackets for every passenger, and avoid impaired operation.  WVLT 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Knoxville man recounted his long battle with addiction on Mental Health Monday—he explained that his recovery led him to triumph and hopes to help others facing similar challenges.  10 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new development of 17 townhomes is coming to the Happy Holler district in North Knoxville by Chattanooga-based Connolly Development Ventures—each home offers one or two bedrooms and ample parking spaces with modern finishes and convenient access to downtown amenities, and construction is set to be completed by the end of May.  10 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Knoxville’s big golf event—the Visit Knoxville Open—is on at Holston Hills Country Club on the Donald Ross course with daily fun events like a kids’ clinic, a first tee shot and a cigar and wine lounge; the tournament began on May 17 and will run until May 25 to help the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley.  WVLT 8
