- ➤ A Knoxville family was reunited with their missing son, Matthew, who returned today nearly 25 years after he vanished when he was found in remote Alaska with help from friends and contacts—ending decades of uncertainty. The family now supports others in similar situations by forming the group Hold on to Hope. 10 News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two teens charged after a fatal crash in March 2024 in Alcoa will be tried as adults — one faces charges including vehicular homicide, criminal homicide, theft over $1,000 and impaired driving while the other faces theft over $1,000, criminal homicide and leaving the scene of an accident with a bond set at $500,000 — after a stolen truck ran a red light and struck a car that resulted in a death. 6 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Tennessee Department of Education launched the Education Freedom Scholarship program on May 15 and received over 38,000 applications by May 19—about half from families meeting income requirements. The department said a temporary email issue was resolved quickly and it will award 20,000 scholarships for the upcoming school year. WVLT 8
- ➤ A new OREA report shows that East Tennessee schools have informally sent students with disabilities home without recording it, leaving families without the legal protections they need. Local advocates call for better training and more support roles — such as special ed teachers and counselors — to help these students learn effectively. 10 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Bill Lee signed a bill on May 21 banning Glock switches—devices that convert semi-automatic handguns into illegal fully automatic weapons—and the measure raises penalties from a Class E felony to a Class C felony. WVLT 8
- ➤ Mayor Indya Kincannon is proposing a half cent increase in the sales tax to pay for affordable housing, new sidewalks, and deferred public maintenance while keeping groceries untaxed to help families. If the city council approves the proposal, Knoxville voters will decide on Nov. 4 and Knox County may join if its commission agrees+ the increase would raise the tax to 9.75% and add about $47 million in revenue each year if passed.
