COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local creator Matthew Bounds posted a video calling for help as Knox Pride food pantry ran low on supplies after federal funding cuts. Donations came in quickly—about 30,000 lbs that helped cover three months' rent and will keep the center running through 2025.  10 News
  • Sequoyah High student Kayla Couch from Madisonville died on May 22 after her second battle with brain cancer—her father, school counselors and Monroe County Emergency Services shared their sorrow and honored her courage—leaving a community that will deeply miss her.  6 News
  • After Hurricane Helene flooded Poga on Jan. 7, 2025—destroying key bridges and a fire truck—the community began its recovery with temporary bridges donated by Troy Henry and road repairs on US Route 321 to reconnect Poga with Elizabethton. The Elk Mills-Poga Volunteer Fire Department also received donated trucks to replace lost equipment and support ongoing operations.  Knoxville News Sentinel

  • Knoxville police are looking for Richard Shaver—recently resigned as West High School coach—accused of multiple sex crimes.  10 News
  • On Tuesday, May 20, a Knoxville man was arrested in Conecuh County, Alabama when police found a modified car battery hiding 15 pounds of suspected fentanyl (valued at $250,000) during a traffic stop; he is held on a $1 million bond as the investigation continues.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TDOT paused road construction-related lane closures for Memorial Day weekend to ease heavy holiday traffic from noon Friday, May 23 through 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 27—drivers may still face lane restrictions at long-term construction projects.  10 News
  • TDOT has suspended interstate construction work that required lane closures from noon on May 23 until 6:00 a.m. on May 27 to ease traffic for Memorial Day weekend while some long-term closures remain in effect. Several streets in Sevierville and a stretch of Court Avenue are set to close for local events (7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on May 25 and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on May 26) as AAA offered travel time advice with nearly 948,300 Tennesseans planning holiday trips.  6 News
