COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This Memorial Day weekend, volunteers at Knoxville National Cemetery are placing American flags on 8,400 veterans’ graves to honor those who gave their lives for freedom. The event serves as a somber reminder—freedom is not free—and helps the community remember past sacrifices.  WVLT 8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rural Metro Fire responded at 2:45 a.m. Saturday to a house fire on the 1700 block of Woodson Drive in South Knox County — rescuing a cat while ensuring occupants were safe and quickly putting out the flames.  WVLT 8

CRIME NEWS

  • Two men were charged after a crash at 12:06 a.m. on I-75 in Monroe County on Friday — a 1997 Ford Mustang lost control while passing a commercial vehicle near mile marker 65 and hit a Nissan Frontier that overturned and injured its driver — with Eddie Fox, 28, charged with vehicular assault and driving on a revoked license while the 26-year-old passenger was charged with accessory after the fact.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • American flags will be placed on nearly 8,000 veterans’ gravestones at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery over the weekend—honoring the sacrifice of those who did not make it home.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Anderson County Career and Technical Center received a new virtual reality simulator earlier this year that is used to teach real-life skills. Enrollment for next year's classes has already filled up + showing the high demand for this training.  10 News
  • Students at Anderson County Career and Technical Center learned to operate a Caterpillar bulldozer in a virtual setting after the school received the simulator earlier this year; class enrollment for next school year is already full — several students are now using these skills to get construction jobs.  10 News

FINANCE NEWS

  • The Federal Trade Commission reported that Tennesseans lost over $23 million to investment scams during the first quarter and the Better Business Bureau noted that many victims lost about $5,000 on average. Officials ask residents to report such scams—steps that may help stop further losses.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency urged boaters to follow safety tips ahead of Memorial Day weekend after eight fatal boating incidents occurred in 2025. The agency said boaters should take a safety course, check equipment, make a float plan, wear life jackets, and avoid alcohol so everyone stays safe on the water.  WVLT 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • University of Tennessee softball pitcher Karlyn Pickens broke her own record on Saturday in Knoxville when she threw a 79.4 mph pitch in game 2 of the Super Regionals against Nebraska—she had set her previous mark at 78.2 mph.  10 News
  • Farragut baseball won its fourth straight 4A state championship on May 24 with an 11 to 3 win over Clarksville in Murfreesboro. The team earned a 14th state title in program history after a big sixth inning — Brazton Tye hit a grand slam and Owen Stelzer made a two-run double.  10 News
