  • Sweet P's, a popular BBQ restaurant in downtown Knoxville, will close on June 15th—after a decade in business as the owner cited a drop in sales.  10 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Police said that on Wednesday around 4:30 p.m. in Montgomery Village a shooter fired a gun into two occupied apartments without injuring anyone—officials are asking witnesses to come forward and noted a gray Dodge Ram was seen in the area.  WVLT 8

  • Today, The Bottom hosts a banned book reading event at Lawson McGhee Library from 2-4 p.m.—attendees will discuss 'Grown' by Tiffany Jackson amidst the removal of 65 books from Knox County libraries under the Age-Appropriate Materials Act.  Knoxville News Sentinel

ECONOMY NEWS

  • HUD changed the rules for FHA-insured loans on May 25—only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents qualify, leaving many Tennessee homebuyers without this option. Loan officer Lane Gonzalez said buyers can still try for conventional loans but must meet higher credit score requirements.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs asked Gov. Bill Lee to have the state take over the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Detention Center after two employees allegedly faced retaliation for reporting issues—he also plans to urge the Knox County Commission to pass an ordinance shifting management to the county sheriff’s office until new leadership is in place.  10 News
  • Liberty Place in West Knoxville, a 32-unit veterans housing project with on-site VA support and solar panels, was honored in Washington, D.C. when KCDC received the Outstanding Partnership Award from the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. KCDC—its first project dedicated to veterans—worked with more than 25 local partners and government agencies to advance the $15 million development.  6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Research by Postpartum Support International shows that one in five mothers face depression and anxiety after having a baby, and a state survey found that about 17% of new mothers in Tennessee reported depressive symptoms within three months following pregnancy. Health groups advise that treatment and support are available through local services and the National Maternal Health Hotline — 833-TLC-MAMA.  WVLT 8
