- ➤ More than 100 community members gathered at Douglas Lake to assemble 200 care packages to support those still recovering from Hurricane Helene—showing strong local volunteer effort. WVLT 8
- ➤ South Press Cafe—a South Knoxville coffee shop at 3715 Chapman Highway—will close on Sunday, June 29 due to rising operating costs just days before its five-year anniversary. Owner Joslynn Fish will host one last family supper at 6 p.m. so the community can gather before it shuts down. WVLT 8
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 40-year-old Knoxville man, Latawyne Osborne, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and one count of aggravated sexual battery for an April 2024 shooting on Gilbert Lane that killed 22-year-old Danishka Sibaja Mejia and injured three others — he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. - ➤ A Knoxville man—40-year-old Travis Murrah—fired shots at his father's home on Gratz Street Saturday evening and was later detained on Broadway after officers discovered a strong odor of alcohol, a handgun, a pistol and an empty shell casing in his truck; he now faces charges of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, DUI and possession of a handgun while under the influence. - ➤ Historic House Museums of Knoxville celebrated 229th Statehood Day on June 1—marking over two centuries since Tennessee joined the union. WVLT 8
- ➤ Historic House Museums of Knoxville are observing the 229th Statehood Day by hosting events at five sites including Marble Springs and Mabry-Hazen House—each site revealing a unique part of the city's history and its role in building the state. WVLT 8
- ➤ Local photographer Nate Nelson captured rare images of synchronous fireflies at Great Smoky Mountains National Park's Elkmont event. The park will soon release 960 vehicle reservations (120 per night during an eight-day period) through a lottery that opens Friday at 10 a.m. and closes Monday at 11:59 p.m. WVLT 8

- ➤ Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced that lane closures on Little River Road and the Spur will begin June 3 and end June 12—maintenance work will mow, trim, and repair roads while drivers are advised to follow detour routes to avoid delays. Knoxville News Sentinel
