CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Feb. 6 a 74-year-old man who visited a financial office in Madisonville became ill and was arrested for disorderly conduct before officers restrained him in a jail cell with an approved restraint chair and spit mask to prevent self-harm—he later died at Blount Memorial Hospital and a deputy seen making an inappropriate gesture in the footage is no longer employed. 10 News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Two new artifacts from passengers Isador and Ida Straus—one a pocket watch and one a letter—arrived at Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge and will be on display until December 5 before going to auction in the United Kingdom where they are expected to sell for more than $1 million. 6 News
- ➤ Knox News photographers have shared their best photos from May that capture local graduations, proms, and sports events at venues like Sherri Parker Lee Stadium—showing a busy month of photojournalism in Knoxville. Knoxville News Sentinel
- ➤ Built in 1901 on mineral springs discovered in the early 1890s, Whittle Springs Hotel became a popular Knoxville resort with dancing, dining and an enormous swimming pool that opened in summer 1919 — by 1963 the hotel was set for demolition and its pool was filled in 1968, leaving only the golf course today. - ➤ Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs and Attorney Greg Isaacs discussed concerns at the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Detention Center after two employees, including its only nurse, were fired for reporting issues. Jacobs demanded the dismissed workers be rehired and urged the Commission to shift control to the Sheriff’s Office while Richard Bean will retire effective August 1 — a change that may prompt state intervention. 6 News
