COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Legal Aid of East Tennessee's Eviction Prevention Program in Knoxville lost its 18‑month grant and now has funding for only one attorney and one paralegal to help tenants facing eviction. In 2024 the team handled nearly 600 cases with a 90% success rate — a success rate that contrasts with the recent weekly docket of about 250 cases, showing that demand remains high.  WVLT 8
  • Today, Legacy Parks Foundation hosts Knox County’s Day of Play as summer begins, inviting residents to join outdoor activities—local updates will provide details on times and locations.  10 News

CRIME NEWS

  • A Tennessee woman, Katrina Favret, was indicted for helping make videos that show cruel abuse of monkeys+ the U.S. Justice Department said she used encrypted chats to send money to Indonesians who carried out the acts, and a North Carolina man and an Ohio man were also indicted.  WVLT 8
  • A Knoxville police officer is accused of shoplifting kratom in uniform and is under investigation as state lawmakers consider tighter rules on the substance—raising questions about its legality.  WVLT 8
  • A 35-year-old Knoxville man, Zachary Newton, was indicted for second-degree murder for allegedly giving drugs that led to a July overdose death in an Asheville Highway apartment and faces charges for sale & delivery of fentanyl and cocaine and for tampering with evidence.  WVLT 8

  • Knoxville's Film Fest Knox gained national recognition when MovieMaker Magazine named it one of the 50 best film festivals to watch — the boost shows its growing reputation among movie fans.  10 News
  • Knox County’s Second Saturday concert series returns at The Cove at Concord Park with free concerts from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second Saturday of June, July, and August — kickoff features The Rocky Bottom Band on June 14, followed by Bryson Quick on July 12 and Wild Blue Yonder on Aug. 9.  WVLT 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tennessee baseball pitcher Liam Doyle was named National Pitcher of the Year by Perfect Game after he helped the Vols reach their fifth straight NCAA Super Regional and finished with a 10-4 record and 164 strikeouts, setting a team record. He also joined teammates Andrew Fischer, Gavin Kilen, and Levi Clark in earning Perfect Game All-America honors.  10 News
