  • A woman was charged after crashing her minivan into a West Knoxville nursing home—one man died during the incident—while court records say she was suicidal and homicidal at the time.  10 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Black communities in East Tennessee have celebrated the Eighth of August as Emancipation Day for nearly 160 years, though Andrew Johnson freed his slaves on Aug. 8th, 1863 and widespread freedom came on Feb. 25th, 1865. Records show that Knoxville and other areas hold annual jubilees + the first celebration began in 1871 to honor local history.  Knoxville News Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Park Service announced that Abrams Falls Trails and its trailhead parking lot will be closed for maintenance from today through Wednesday so crews can complete work—visitors are encouraged to use alternate trails in the park.  WVLT 8

  • Dr. Khaled Abumayaleh, a well-known eye doctor from Alcoa, and his daughter Raiyan are stuck in Jerusalem amid missile strikes between Israel and Iran. They were set to return to East Tennessee yesterday but now face flight cancellations and rising ticket prices—while saying they are safe for now.  WVLT 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Emma Hughett, an 11-year-old girl from Scott County, is recovering in Nashville after her recent bone marrow transplant—an important step in her ongoing cancer treatment that began in January. Her father, Chad Hughett, said he felt relief after the transplant and has spent many sleepless nights at East Tennessee Children's Hospital and TriStar caring for his family.  10 News
  • Genesis Neuroscience Clinic in Knoxville is conducting clinical trials of an FDA-approved infusion treatment that targets a molecule in Alzheimer’s and Dementia to reduce brain buildup and slow disease progression. The clinic said the trial will test if patients can soon self-administer the infusion at home to ease travel for those in rural areas — the study could improve patients’ quality of life.  WVLT 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Knoxville's Dauntless Armored Combat revives a medieval sport using real steel weapons in matches that have grown popular since the team was founded two years ago. Team captain Alex Heder said the squad practices every Sunday at Schulz Bräu Brewing Company (its home turf six nights a year) and draws large local crowds.  WVLT 8
