COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly $19,000 was donated to Young-Williams Animal Center to help care for kittens in honor of Kylie Roberto—councilman’s daughter who died in April 2024. The funds will support critical kitten care during the busy months of spring and summer.  6 News
  • Hundreds gathered Monday evening at UT Medical Center to hold a prayer vigil for injured Knox County deputy Swanger — the event reflected strong local support as he recovers.  WVLT 8

CRIME NEWS

  • A Florida man named Giovannie Lazaro Torres was arrested in Tampa and will be extradited within 30 days to face 32 felony charges including child sex abuse of three juveniles in Blount County—authorities said he used social media to coerce victims and mailed them explicit materials—and state agencies in Tennessee and Florida have coordinated his arrest.  6 News
  • Investigators arrested 30-year-old Giovannie Lazaro Torres, a Florida man, in Blount County for a 32-count felony indictment involving the sexual abuse of three minors and linked him to additional victims in other states—law enforcement took him into custody on a governor’s warrant and he will be extradited to face charges.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Tennessee’s Board of Trustees will vote on July 1 to control the Maplehurst property—5.6 acres with 199 apartments and parking spaces next to campus intended for a live-work-play-learn neighborhood, with UTK having the option to buy later.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Knox County commissioners approved an 18-month plan to transfer control of the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Detention Center to the sheriff’s office, which will take over the facility from Jan. 1 to June 30—a decision made after whistleblower reports prompted calls for reform. The move sets a clear path for improved oversight of the center.  10 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jordan Thomas became the first double-amputee to qualify for the Tennessee State Amateur after shooting a 2-over-par 72 in his qualifier at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville; he lost both legs as a teenager and is ranked the No. 2 double-amputee golfer in the world. Thomas will tee off today at 8:50 a.m.—marking a historic milestone in adaptive sports.  10 News
