CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Charles Coffman (19) has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, theft and tampering with evidence in Knoxville based on warrant records. 10 News
- ➤ A Knoxville man is on trial for a wrong-way crash on Pellissippi Parkway that killed two men in November 2022—Eduardo Deavila drove with a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit and cocaine in his system—and now faces multiple counts of vehicular homicide in Knox County Criminal Court. 10 News
- ➤ A Powell man appeared in court to face charges after he allegedly attacked a Knox County deputy—leaving the officer in critical condition. 10 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University of Tennessee student veteran Kevin Ho won the Military Friendly Veteran of the Year for Tennessee and is now in the running for National Veteran of the Year; he serves as president of Student Veterans of America and as a student government senator while working at the Veterans Success Center. Voting for the national award will close July 4 — a deadline that underscores his rising recognition among local veteran groups. WVLT 8
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Knoxville City Council will vote today on a proposed tax increase that—if passed—will appear on the November ballot for voters to decide on. Council members meet to decide whether the measure should be placed on the ballot—a move that will shape local tax policy. 10 News
- ➤ Knoxville voters will decide at the polls this fall if the local sales tax will increase from 2.25% to 2.75% after the city council approved adding the measure by a 7—1 vote. The increase is expected to generate $47 million annually to fund projects such as affordable housing, sidewalk repairs and road paving while early voting runs from October 15 to 30. 6 News
- ➤ On Tuesday night, the Knoxville City Council approved Mayor Indya Kincannon’s proposal for a half-percent increase in the local option sales tax and voted to put the referendum on the November ballot while exempting food and food ingredients from the tax. The measure raised the rate from 2.25% (the current rate) to 2.75% and was designed to generate about $47 million a year for public projects. WVLT 8

- ➤ Cherokee Health rebranded as River Valley Health on Tuesday and said it is adding a pharmacy delivery program + walk-in clinics. The change follows its growth from a small mental health clinic in 1960 to a regional healthcare leader with 20 clinics, two mobile clinics + telehealth services. WVLT 8
