COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KAPA Kitchen Food Pantry—run by the Knoxville Academy of Medicine—has seen a 300% rise in food assistance requests since January and is asking the community to donate food and hygiene products to help meet the growing need. The pantry received 40 new referrals in one week, supporting nearly 200 people across Knoxville and nearby counties.  6 News
  • Zoo Knoxville is asking the public to help name two red wolf pups and two bat-eared fox kits. The contest starts on Saturday, June 28 with name suggestions accepted online and at the zoo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—the zoo will narrow the options on July 4, allow public voting until July 10, and announce the winners on July 11.  6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • The TBI and Cocke County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of David Jacob Shaub, 41, whose body was found near Messer Branch Road in Hartford around 4:30 p.m. Monday — his body was sent for autopsy and the investigation remains active.  6 News
  • A Powell man, Christopher Michael Hensley, 44, was charged with multiple offenses including attempted second-degree murder after he threw rocks at Knox County deputies during a 'shots fired' call on June 21, hitting Deputy Dalton Swanger with a large rock or brick and prompting a search that uncovered over 100 marijuana plants at his home — he is held on a $2 million bond.  6 News

  • Middlesboro, KY native Bill Taylor and the Appalachian Heathens gave a soulful cover of Bob Dylan's 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' on Tuesday's America's Got Talent episode—earning praise from judge Simon Cowell and advancing them to the second round.  10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Camper Paige shared her favorite aspects of attending Tremont Institute today, where she enjoys hands-on learning. The Great Smoky Mountains Institute offers immersive programs for youth, educators and adults.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Knoxville City Council approved a contract with Blue Line Solutions to install speed enforcement cameras in school zones (using LiDAR technology) as part of the Vision Zero plan to reduce traffic deaths by 2040. The project will start with an engineering study to prioritize locations and is expected to have some cameras installed before the new school year (without cost to taxpayers).  10 News
  • Austin Powder is under investigation by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board after its Greene County facility spewed a red gas cloud late last year — a malfunction during startup was blamed for the spill. The board is also looking into a similar incident at the company’s Ohio facility — it will recommend safer practices to prevent more occurrences.  WVLT 8
