- ➤ Neighbors in Cocke County continue to rebuild after Helene flooding that began on Sept 27—Cocke County Long Term Recovery said about 20 houses are in major repair while a dozen more get ready for full reconstruction. Volunteers from as far as Illinois have also helped repair ramps to raise homes and improve safety. WVLT 8
- ➤ A fireball streaked across Knoxville’s sky on Thursday afternoon, and dashcam footage on North Gallaher Road and I-40 captured the unusual sight reported in nearby states. The American Meteor Society said it was a bolide (a rare, bright meteor that can cause a sonic boom) after receiving over 200 reports. 10 News

- ➤ Eduardo DeAvila was convicted for a 2022 wrong-way crash on Pellissippi Parkway that left two people dead and seriously injured one passenger—he is scheduled for sentencing on August 22. 6 News
- ➤ Damon Bradly Jackson, 41, was arrested in East Knoxville on June 27 on an aggravated animal cruelty charge after a caller reported seeing him with a dog on the East Governor John Sevier Hwy bridge and dash-camera footage linked him to throwing the dog from the bridge—he said he acted to save the dog from euthanasia, though officials confirmed it was dead and 12 other dogs were removed from his property. 6 News
- ➤ The U.S. government plans to deport Kilmer Abrego Garcia when he is released from jail in Tennessee—he faces federal smuggling charges and his lawyers in Nashville and Maryland are trying to block the deportation while a Nashville judge will review his release conditions on July 16. WVLT 8

- ➤ Knoxville City Council voted this week to place Mayor Kincannon’s proposed half cent local sales tax increase on the November ballot which, if approved, will raise the tax from 2.25% to 2.75% to pay for local projects. Voters will choose on improvements like affordable housing, sidewalks near schools, road paving, and park upkeep — the plan includes online annual reports — while everyday items remain exempt. 6 News
