ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash on US 411 in Blount County that occurred Tuesday at 3:41 p.m.—the highway between Brick Mill Road and Thompson Bridge Road was closed while officials advised travelers to find alternate routes. 6 News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Knoxville man named Kenyan Warren was convicted of vehicular homicide for killing a woman and seriously injuring a man when he drove drunk in August 2022—witnesses said he kicked the victim and cursed at her before trying to drag her from the road. WVLT 8
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Tennessee will hold its annual tax-free weekend from July 25 at 12:01 a.m. to July 27 at 11:59 p.m., letting shoppers avoid a 9.25% sales tax on qualifying clothing, school supplies and prebuilt computers. Purchases made online or in-store will be tax-free (if each item's cost meets set limits) to help families get ready for the new school year. Knoxville News Sentinel

- ➤ Crews are maintaining 22 miles of hiking and biking trails (spanning more than 300 acres) at Aspire Park (ensuring trails remain safe for visitors). 10 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Knoxville City Council approved a $3.9 million plan to upgrade Middlebrook Pike with an Advanced Traffic Management System that links 23 traffic signals and lets city workers adjust them in real time — replacing equipment over 25 years old. Construction will start this fall and finish in winter 2027 — and the council also let Mayor Indya Kincannon move forward with a First Creek greenway connection and a study to manage flooding at Chilhowee Park. - ➤ Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation said a federal grant for $42.7 million to build walk and bike paths on the east side was cut by the Big Beautiful Bill—city leaders now plan to seek local funding to help move forward with their $85.6 million project. Knoxville News Sentinel
- ➤ Y-12 is demolishing Alpha-2, a building used during the Manhattan Project that contained hazardous asbestos and mercury which crews removed over four years. Officials say this large demolition project will clear the way for new national security facilities while one historic building is preserved. WVLT 8
- ➤ The Knox County Sheriff’s Office deleted a mugshot of Layla Soliz, a Muslim protester arrested in 2024 at the University of Tennessee after protesting Israel’s war in Gaza without her hijab. The office settled with her in March and later asked for the federal lawsuit to be dismissed—even though an email from June 24 showed she did not agree that deleting the photo ended the case. WVLT 8
