- ➤ An unidentified person was shot in the hand on Wednesday morning as Knox County Sheriff's Office personnel tried to serve a warrant at a residence on the 7300 block of Brook Run Way in South Knox County—TBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting while the injured person is treated at a local hospital. 10 News
- ➤ A Knoxville man (42-year-old Roderick McAlpin) was arrested on arson charges after setting intentional fires (three mattresses and a closet) in his home early Monday on Larkwood Lane after his wife told him to leave. 10 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Demolition is underway at the University of Tennessee's Melrose Hall dormitory as heavy machinery clears the Knoxville site for a new project. A five-story, 116,000-square-foot student center is set to open Fall 2027 and will include classrooms, student service offices, testing rooms, student lounges, and a timber pavilion (with a jewel box walkway linking a rooftop terrace and green spaces). 6 News
- ➤ UT Gardens runs the Sow 2 Grow summer program where teens with disabilities learn job and social skills by weeding, watering, and planting—tasks that build confidence and help them prepare for future work. - ➤ Knoxville officials will improve Broadway safety by building a greenway between Cecil Avenue and Woodland Avenue after three pedestrian crashes since early 2024; the $6.2 million project will refresh crosswalks and close one lane on each side during 18 months of work—detour routes will remain open for access to the shopping center, bus stops and Fulton High School. A separate $3.2 million project funded by a federal grant will link 23 traffic signals along Middlebrook Pike and University Avenue to ease congestion, with work starting this fall and ending by winter.
