COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Zoo Knoxville announced names for two red wolf pups and two bat-eared fox kits chosen from over 2,000 community submissions — the red wolves are named Copper and Ember while the fox kits are Chester and Poppy. Visitors can watch these new arrivals grow this summer as the zoo celebrates a conservation milestone.  10 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Knoxville man, Kodie Morocco, died on July 8 when his motorcycle struck an SUV+which was crossing four lanes at the Broadway and Rose Drive intersection, causing the vehicle to hit a shopping center building and sending the driver to a hospital for treatment.  Knoxville News Sentinel

  • Deputies with the Blount County Sheriff's Office are looking for a missing man from Rockford—Mark Allen Boling, 62, with multiple medical conditions, who left his home on Self Hollow Road on Wednesday and did not return.  10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Knox County Schools eliminated 27.5 positions on July 1 due to a federal funding freeze—forcing gifted coaches to fill those roles—and parents are now worried the program will change in a way that leaves teachers with extra work and less support. They hope the district can find a better solution to keep the program strong.  10 News
  • The Knox County Board of Education approved a new cellphone policy on Thursday to align with state law that bans wireless devices during class, including cellphones, smartwatches, laptops, tablets, and smart glasses. The policy allows exemptions for emergencies and special education plans—teachers may confiscate devices if they cause disruptions and students risk disciplinary action.  6 News

  • Knoxville candidates are speaking out ahead of the non-partisan Aug. 26 municipal primary to fill five council seats because current incumbents reached their term limit—voters can register until July 18 and vote early from Aug. 6 to Aug. 21—while the top two finishers in each district will face a Nov. 4 general election.  10 News

  • The annual GKAISA City Meet in Knoxville has been renamed as the 2025 Tom Schumann Memorial GKAISA City Championship Meet to honor Tom Schumann (a key swimming official since the 1980s who passed away last November). Held at the Allan Jones Aquatics Center on the University of Tennessee campus, the finals are being held today.  WVLT 8
