COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Knoxville Area Transit serves 3 million riders on 20 routes that cover much of the city while its staff begin early before most people wake up. Veteran dispatcher Katie Griffin and driver Greg Robinson start their shifts at 4 a.m.—ensuring safe rides for those traveling to work, school, and medical appointments.  10 News
  • Anderson County Fair will open tomorrow and run through Saturday, offering carnival rides, food, livestock displays, and free entry for kids 15 and younger on most days—admission starts at $10 which covers parking and a night of rides. Volunteers like Carl Wright, a longtime fan, help bring the community together at the event.  10 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rescue teams are searching the Young Mine off W Highway 11E in New Market after Nyrstar reported an underground incident at around 4:30 a.m. Saturday—one employee remains unaccounted for while all others were safely evacuated.  WVLT 8

CRIME NEWS

  • The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office warns residents of scams where fraudsters ask for Bitcoin payments via cryptocurrency ATMs for overdue bills, missed court dates, or family emergencies—deputies stress they will never call to demand cryptocurrency payments and urge anyone suspicious to contact them for advice.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Summer break is ending in East Tennessee as school districts plan to begin classes at different times next week and later, with Alcoa City Schools starting on July 18 and some districts beginning in early August. A tax-free weekend at the end of July will offer deals on school supplies—helping parents get ready for the 2025-26 school year.  WVLT 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deputy Dalton Swanger, injured on June 21 while answering a call, gave his first update after more than two weeks in the hospital and said he will return to work. He detailed his injuries including a depressed skull fracture, cerebral contusion, and disc protrusions in his neck — and thanked local supporters for their help.  WVLT 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alcoa Tornadoes plan to win their 11th title with new quarterback Thomas Manu as they move up to Class 4A in Region 2 to face tougher teams. The team will open its season against Maryville (Aug. 22) as coaches expect Manu to lead the offense forward (replacing Eli Graf’s record-setting season).  10 News
  • Former Tennessee football star Dylan Sampson held a youth football camp at Grace Christian Academy where over 400 local kids attended — the former running back, now drafted by Cleveland, said returning to his second home was important as he gave back to his loyal Vol Nation.  10 News
