ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The family of a 21-year-old motorcyclist killed Tuesday in a crash at North Broadway will hold a memorial ride on July 20 at 1 p.m. in front of Longway Barbeque on Lovell Road to raise driving safety awareness—his mother urged drivers to stay alert and called on officials to add safety features at the dangerous intersection, noting he left behind a 5-year-old son, Milan.  10 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Eugenio Abraham Solis Klarks, 31, was sentenced to 18 years in prison without parole after he shot at a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper during a high-speed chase that began in Loudon County and ended in Knox County on January 12th—troopers were not injured.  WVLT 8
  • Deputy Dalton Swanger suffered severe head injuries including a depressed skull fracture and cerebral contusions when he was struck by a rock during a domestic call on June 22 and vowed to return to duty while Christopher Michael Hensley now faces charges including attempted second-degree murder— court records show.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Greenbrier Mountain Festival will take place in Pittman Center on July 25 and 26 with free admission, bluegrass-gospel music, 100 food and craft vendors, tractor trails and mountain craft demonstrations that showcase the heritage of the Smoky Mountains. The event will also include bounce houses for kids — and the Tabernacle Experience — and is presented by Hills Creek Baptist Church and the town of Pittman Center at 154 Hills Creek Road in Sevierville.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Knox County Schools has released a collection of photos from the 1960s that show sports, classes and extracurricular activities at local schools. The archive includes images from school events and community gatherings that capture a rich history of education in the county.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • Knox County Schools announced that applications for free and reduced-price meals are now open for students who cannot pay for breakfast and lunch, including children in households receiving SNAP or Families First benefits—students at Community Eligibility Provision schools will get meals automatically while others must apply each year before the school year starts on Aug. 7.  WVLT 8
