- ➤ Young-Williams Animal Center stated that its shelter is at critical capacity, housing 192 dogs and 277 cats while its ideal space is for 94 dogs and 84 cats. The center asked the community not to bring in stray animals that are not threatening so it can focus on emergency intake—adoption fees are waived through July 19 with a required monetary donation for the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Summer National Empty The Shelters event. 6 News
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Monday just after 3:00 a.m., Knoxville Firefighters responded to a house fire on Sanderson Road near Western Ave in West Knoxville, rescuing two residents who evacuated after their smoke alarms sounded and reporting no injuries despite heavy fire and water damage that left the home uninhabitable as investigators worked to determine the cause. - ➤ Early Monday morning, a West Knoxville home on Sanderson Road in the 3100 block caught fire and woke two residents by its smoke alarms, who evacuated safely—firefighters arrived at 3:05 a.m. and doused the flames within 10 minutes while the home suffered severe damage and investigators began determining the cause. 10 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Officials at the University of Tennessee Foundation announced Monday record-breaking gifts and commitments of $492,845,544 for 2025—an increase from last year’s $400 million that pushed them to 70% of their $3 billion goal across the UT System. The funds will support campus projects and operations on UT campuses. WVLT 8
- ➤ Yesterday, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville shared that it raised $428 million in donations during fiscal year 2024-25 from more than 70,000 donors, with the funds supporting over 12,000 student scholarships worth over $30 million — a milestone that shows strong backing for education, research, economic development and community service. 6 News
- ➤ School districts in East Tennessee and Southeastern Kentucky revealed start dates for the 2025–2026 school year — Alcoa City Schools will return on July 18 and Whitley County Schools will begin on August 13, with other districts scheduling openings from July 28 to August 11. 6 News
