COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Knoxville pastor Chris Battle turned empty church lots into community gardens to supply fresh produce after USDA cuts funding for food banks in East Knoxville, where a food desert exists. He started Battle Field Farm—a nonprofit that works to feed hungry neighbors.  10 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Knoxville police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Tuesday evening near Woodlawn Pike on Chapman Highway where officers found the motorcycle hit a stopped pickup truck at a traffic light just before 11:30 p.m.—the rider was taken to UT Medical Center and later died.  WVLT 8

  • Knox County Schools published archived photos from the 1980s that show classroom lessons, sports events and community gatherings at schools like West High and Farragut High. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs appointed Brian Bivens as interim director of the juvenile detention center as he toured the facility with the new board and noted issues like missing supervisory roles and poor staff training; Bivens outlined plans to add behavior incentives, emergency radio features and extra programs for juveniles — while Sheriff Spangler and the Sheriff’s Office will take more control in 2026.  WVLT 8
  • Knoxville City Council approved a $30 million plan to ease traffic on busy roads; the plan includes a $3.9 million upgrade of traffic signals on Middlebrook Pike—where about 26,000 vehicles travel daily. Construction will begin this fall with a 19-month timeline fully funded by a federal congestion mitigation grant, and similar projects are planned for Broadway, the UT area, Chapman Highway and Kingston Pike.  10 News
  • Knox County is auditing its development regulations to align them with the goals of the Advance Knox plan and prepare a Unified Development Ordinance that updates zoning, street, subdivision, and building codes. Orion Planning + Design is leading the review by meeting with technical and community stakeholders and planning public events in the fall to guide future growth.  10 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Knox County Health Department said two children were hospitalized in July for La Crosse virus and are now recovering at home — they are the first cases reported this year.  6 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Tennessee point guard Zakai Zeigler signed with French team Nanterre 92, which announced his signing on Wednesday on social media after he played with the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Summer League. In his final season with the Vols he averaged 13.6 points and 7.4 assists and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.  10 News
  • Tennessee football freshmen Travis Smith Jr. and Jaedon Harmon donated $5,000 each from their NIL money to Wesley House Community Center in Knoxville on Wednesday afternoon—after volunteering during Tennessee football’s day of service—and together they presented a $10,000 check to support the center's children.  10 News
