COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rick Barnes, Tennessee men’s basketball coach, launched a $400,000 donation challenge — every donation will be matched until an $800,000 goal is reached — to help fund Emerald Youth Foundation programs for tutoring, sports, and health for underserved Knoxville youth.  6 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Motorcyclist Mohamed Al-nadi, 35, died in a crash on N. Peters Road last Friday night when he struck a Chevy SUV turning left from a private driveway—he was thrown from his bike, taken to a local hospital, and pronounced dead as KPD investigators continue their work.  6 News
  • A dump truck hit a traffic pole in Lenoir City, causing Highway 11 and Highway 70 to close—one person sustained an injury as deputies diverted traffic and expected delays into the evening.  WVLT 8

CRIME NEWS

  • Jordin Adarius Henderson, 21, from Knoxville is charged with attempted second-degree murder after witnesses said he stabbed a man during a fight at a party on Holbrook Drive — the victim suffered multiple stab wounds and a collapsed lung and is in stable condition after treatment, and a bond hearing is set for Tuesday.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richard Bean said he was shocked to be pushed out after 50 years when Mayor Glenn Jacobs called for him to step down amid safety and management concerns at the detention center. Local attorney Billy Stokes criticized the rushed change+he noted that a thorough review of the staff issues might have prevented the abrupt overhaul.  10 News
  • Three Knoxville police officers sued the city after they claimed a new payment plan misclassified them and lowered their pay despite long service. They are seeking reclassification and retroactive payments—including attorneys’ fees and costs—a claim echoed by a separate lawsuit from firefighters.  6 News
  • Knoxville police will increase enforcement in school zones as the new school year begins to curb speeding and distracted driving. City officials plan to install cameras at all 40 schools—this measure aims to protect children by holding drivers accountable.  WVLT 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Rejoice Fertility in Knoxville, a baby boy was born from an embryo frozen in 1994, setting a record for the oldest embryo used for a live birth—an achievement that offers new hope for families pursuing fertility treatment. The Pierce family came from Ohio with help from an embryo adoption agency, and lab experts used a specialized method to thaw the nearly 31-year-old embryo safely.  WVLT 8

  • Former Tennessee baseball star Blake Burke returns to Knoxville as he plays for the Biloxi Shuckers against the Smokies in a six-game series from today to August 10th at Covenant Health Park — he recorded a .332 batting average and 50 home runs during his Vols career — and will take the field as a professional.  10 News
  • The University of Tennessee announced on Monday that four of its seven home football games have sold out, including matchups against ETSU, Georgia, UAB and Oklahoma. Limited tickets remain for the games against Arkansas, New Mexico State and Vanderbilt—fans can still buy single-game tickets.  WVLT 8
