- ➤ A jury convicted 28-year-old Jevess Deron Craigmire for attempted first-degree murder after he shot his ex-girlfriend on Dandridge Avenue in April 2024, firing 16 rounds and pistol-whipping her before stealing her car—he now faces at least 31 years in prison without parole and will be sentenced on September 19. 6 News
- ➤ The Frye family started an online petition urging the parole board to keep Jimmy Ray Cureton in prison—Cureton was convicted over 35 years ago for fatally shooting Bill Frye in a South Knoxville parking lot and has never taken responsibility for the crime. 10 News

- ➤ Newfound Gap Road remains closed after a landslide in the Smokies+ forcing tourists leaving Gatlinburg to seek alternative routes to Cherokee. The National Park Service advises using I-40 as the best detour+ and officials plan to update the public when work on the road resumes. WVLT 8

- ➤ Tennessee astronaut Barry 'Butch' Wilmore is retiring from NASA after 25 years, having flown on four spacecraft and spent 464 days in space. He returned a few months ago from a nearly nine-month mission on a Boeing test flight planned for only a few days + completed five spacewalks during his career. 10 News
- ➤ Knoxville’s Gay Street Bridge closed in June last year after an inspection found issues, and a report shows that crews completed work on span two by adding support pieces + cross beams between July 7 and 18 while they fix span five. The work is part of a plan to convert the 126-year-old bridge into a pedestrian walkway with all issues set to be resolved by Dec. 31. WVLT 8
- ➤ Knoxville City Council will review a zoning amendment proposal on Tuesday that would allow cottage court developments in select high- and medium-density areas to ease local affordable housing needs. The Planning Commission, working with Opticos Design Inc., aims to allow clusters of small single-story homes arranged around a shared courtyard — a design that offers lower maintenance and efficient land use. 10 News
