ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 21-year-old firefighter with Blair Volunteer Fire Department died from injuries sustained in a Roane County crash on July 31 — his truck was hit as he turned left — and his department will hold a blood drive on August 12 while his family plans a celebration of life in September. 6 News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Tennessee Comptroller report found Knox County officials misused taxpayer funds when trustee Justin Biggs’ staff exceeded hotel rate guidelines and county vehicles were used for personal travel—property assessor Phil Ballard and former operations director Jason Dobbins have faced felony misconduct charges while Biggs repaid $3,500. - ➤ A Knoxville jury convicted 28-year-old Jevess Craigmire of attempted murder and other charges after he shot his ex-girlfriend on Dandridge Avenue in April 2024—he is scheduled for sentencing on September 19 and faces a minimum of 31 years in prison. 10 News
- ➤ A Sevier County mother, Brenda Dawn Behunin, was sentenced on Aug. 7 to life without parole on two counts of first-degree murder for her role in the death of her 3-year-old son, who died on Jan. 11—she faces additional hearings in November for other charges. 10 News
- ➤ Former Knox County Trustee staff member Jason Dobbins was indicted on two counts of official misconduct for allegedly misusing taxpayer dollars—he is the second employee indicted as officials investigate the office after he was fired by Trustee Justin Biggs. WVLT 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UT will open two new residence halls called Poplar and Beacon to house 1,959 freshmen and ease housing worries. University Housing is working with a private group to quickly build the halls and plans to add a dorm with 1,000 beds next year—helping meet growing enrollment. WVLT 8
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ MasterCraft launches its third annual Surf to Save Lives campaign to raise funds for St. Jude as water sports enthusiasts log their minutes for $1 per minute; the effort began in Knoxville and has already raised $150,000. The campaign will run through Sept. 30 to help reach a $75,000 goal. WVLT 8
