BUSINESS NEWS

  • Southwest Airlines will add flights to Knoxville in 2026. Airport leaders say McGhee Tyson Airport was built to handle 2.6 million passengers annually—highlighting its rapid growth.  10 News

CRIME NEWS

  • White Pine police arrested 59-year-old Derwin Wilds from Newport in connection with a fatal road rage shooting on Sept. 23, 2024 after 20-year-old Jordan Price was shot and later died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center—Wilds faces charges including Voluntary Manslaughter and other serious counts.  WVLT 8
  • Knoxville Police and the Boys and Girls Club have launched a new partnership that marks all four clubs as TLC zones—this effort has led to a 66% drop in non-fatal shootings at Montgomery Village and improved school attendance among local kids.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Tennessee broke enrollment records with over 40,000 students expected this fall as classes begin Monday, Aug. 18, and planned campus upgrades include two new residence halls that will house 1,959 students—supporting growing numbers of first-year and transfer students.  10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anderson County prosecutor Emily Abbott was tapped by Gov. Bill Lee—one of three finalists considered—to be Knox County’s next Criminal Court judge, replacing Judge Steve Sword, and she will be sworn in Monday to start her new role.  10 News
  • Judge Tim Irwin of Knox County Juvenile Court said children feel more at ease when they receive stuffed animals and that his court is nearly out after handing out over 30,000, so he is asking Knoxville residents to bring in new, unused stuffed animals at the Juvenile Justice Center—3323 Division St.  WVLT 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • RAM will host a free telehealth clinic on Sunday at CareCuts in Knoxville—services will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.  10 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Boys and Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley will host the 2025 Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Knoxville Convention Center on Aug. 21 (the event will begin at 5 p.m. with hospitality and include a guest address by Ron Slay) (tickets cost $200 per person or $3000 per table).  WVLT 8
  • The Pride of the Southland Band will march a new route to Neyland Stadium as new gameday traffic patterns are set. The band now starts at Pat Head Summit and travels down Volunteer Boulevard—Peyton Manning Pass and into Gate 21, while road closures from Cumberland Avenue to Lake Loudon Boulevard begin at 5 a.m. to keep Lot 9 safe.  10 News
