- ➤ The Colquitt Foundation donated $750K to Friends of the Smokies to fund repairs after Hurricane Helene — the donation will help restore cabins, barns and schools in Cataloochee Valley and across Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 10 News

- ➤ Knoxville’s first Whataburger will open Monday, August 25 at 11 a.m. at 1830 Cumberland Avenue—its modern design features digital menu boards and a state-of-the-art kitchen. The restaurant will offer gift baskets to the first two customers and swag to the next 50 as part of a special launch—making it the first of three planned locations by MWB Restaurants LLC. 6 News

- ➤ A man identified as Bobby Crain was charged with aggravated burglary after he broke into a Lake Avenue apartment early Thursday morning, asked for a glass of water, jumped from one balcony to another, and returned despite residents trying to stop him (he is set to appear in court on August 25). 6 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Knox County Schools opened a new 43,861 sq. ft. building at Hardin Valley Academy on Thursday morning to serve as a Freshman Academy while adding labs for Health Science, STEM, digital arts, criminal justice, robotics, and photography—expanding both academic and administrative spaces. The facility also includes a teacher workroom, special education suite, and storm shelter to support student learning and safety. 6 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Knox County Elections Administrator Chris Davis said early voting for the Knoxville City Council primary ended with a 6% turnout, about 5,000 voters out of 82,000, and noted that Districts 1, 3 and 6 saw fewer than 1,000 votes each—raising fears that a few ballots could decide tight races. Former Mayor Victor Ashe also warned that this low participation could weaken local democracy as the August 26 primary nears. 10 News
