ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Friday morning, a fire broke out at the Sharps Chapel campground on Lakeview Road—leaving two people dead and prompting an ongoing investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Union County Sheriff’s Office.  6 News

  • Tyler Wheeler, a Knoxville police officer, resigned after he was accused of shoplifting Kratom from a local gas station — he was set to attend a disciplinary hearing before stepping down.  WVLT 8
  • A Knoxville police officer, Tyler Wheeler, resigned before his scheduled pre-disciplinary hearing on Friday after video evidence showed him shoplifting kratom from a convenience store on Kingston Pike—he faces a preliminary hearing on September 23 at 8:30 a.m.  10 News
  • A Rutledge man charged with aggravated robbery stole $1,280 from a victim at a Knoxville Kroger on Aug. 15th—officers later identified him as 37-year-old Joseph Eldridge after a suspect lineup.  WVLT 8

  • A collaboration between VML and the state tourism website brought lyrical alt text to life to help blind and partly sighted visitors better experience Tennessee attractions.   • Eight East TN schools are on US News and World Report's list of Tennessee's top 50 high schools—one Knoxville school ranks in the top 10 with L&N STEM Academy scoring highest among the group.  6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • UT Medical Center will add a mobile lung cancer screening unit on a 45-foot truck funded by a $2.3 million federal grant from the USDA to offer low-dose CT scans in under 15 minutes. It will also deploy a new mobile mammography unit funded by a $5.4 million state grant beginning next year—boosting breast cancer screening access in rural areas.  10 News
