ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A bicyclist died after being hit by a semi truck on East Hunt Road in Alcoa—officials have not reported additional details.  10 News

CRIME NEWS

  • David Henderson — Knox County's former narcotics chief — signed a plea agreement last week and will plead guilty to a count of conspiracy to commit federal program fraud for using a drug fund and a credit card to buy gifts for friends and colleagues, including a former sheriff, from 2011 to 2018.  10 News
  • The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help finding 15-year-old Asher Kai Ford—reported missing from the Middlebrook Pike area Monday night and last seen at the corner of Chert Pit and Andes Road in West Knox County—after officials said he might have difficulty returning home on his own, urging anyone with information to call the Juvenile Crimes Unit.  WVLT 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University officials announced that Tennessee football great Peyton Manning donated $4 million to create two endowment chairs in honor of his academic mentors—Faye Julian and John Haas. The funds will support student success initiatives and faculty research at the College of Communication and Information.  6 News
  • A report titled 'Southern Surge in Education' showed that Tennessee ranked third in math recovery and ninth in reading recovery since the pandemic, with gains credited to phonics-based instruction—rigorous curriculum— and strong teacher support. Gov. Bill Lee said his historic investments in early literacy, summer learning programs, and teachers helped improve scores.  WVLT 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Knox County engineers plan to ease heavy traffic on Hardin Valley Road by adding a roundabout at Marietta Church Road and widening the road from three lanes to five lanes. The projects will be reviewed by the county commission next month and construction is set to start in the fall—work that will continue into next summer.  WVLT 8
  • A former Knox County Juvenile Court judge, Robin Gunn, has filed a federal lawsuit claiming she was fired for trying to protect people's rights—she says unwritten court policies led to bias and broke due process rules.  10 News
  • Former judge Robin Gunn filed a lawsuit alleging that Knox County Juvenile Judge Tim Irwin and Family Services Supervisor Stacey Turpin violated parental rights in custody cases. She says unwritten policies delayed legal counsel and that a racial comment by Irwin led to her firing—she seeks damages and a jury trial.  6 News
