COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs announced Operation Hero’s Hill, a project that will build tiny homes, a computer lab — and a laundry facility for 20 homeless veterans while local students from the 865 Academies program work with contractors on the build.  10 News
  • Knoxville Area Transit announced new rides for UT game days that run before games and return after to help fans get to Neyland Stadium. The service includes UT shuttles from Market Square and SEC shuttles from Willow Avenue along with a park and ride from the Civic Auditorium—costing $10 for shuttles and $25 per car and available on the Transit app.  WVLT 8
  • Knox County 11-year-old Holston Haun reported on the renovated Taco Bell in Strawberry Plains during its grand opening Tuesday—using cue cards and videos—and cut the ribbon to mark the event. His video updates on Team Holston Facebook showed how his work brought the community together.  WVLT 8

CRIME NEWS

  • Lynn La Vita mourns her son Holden Howse, who was fatally shot at a party in Harriman and whose 17-year-old suspect, Riley Pawlick, is now in custody on charges of second-degree murder — Holden had just turned 18 two weeks before his death and his loss leaves his family in deep grief.  WVLT 8

  • Knox News photographers shared favorite photos from August that showed local high school football games, MLB action at Bristol Motor Speedway, community festivals and recovery efforts at Fender's Farm—an exciting display of Knoxville’s vibrant community. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Knoxville has hired CDM Smith Inc. for a $200,000 study on intersection safety — the firm will review crash data and traffic signals to help reduce dangerous crashes, with a report on a toolbox of suggestions due by Dec. 21. The study is part of Project Vision Zero, which aims to lower injuries and fatalities from crashes involving left turns, U-turns, and impaired driving.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • Knoxville city council postponed the final vote on selling the Midway section of Chilhowee Park to Emerald Youth Foundation for four weeks after a Tuesday decision — leaders plan two more community meetings as early as Sept. 8 and Sept. 9 to further discuss the proposal.  10 News

  • UT's Chief of Police said that new traffic changes at Neyland—like closing parts of Peyton Manning Pass and Phillip Fulmer Way from 5 a.m.—will help protect fans when the Tennessee Vols play their home opener against East Tennessee State University on Saturday.  10 News
