CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Tellico Plains authorities charged Keith McJunkin with second-degree murder—deputies responded to a stabbing on the 700 block of Cagle Road late Thursday and provided aid before victim Jeffrey Dale Millsaps died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center early Friday. 6 News
- ➤ A member of the Aryan Nation was convicted for stabbing three people at Brickyard Bar and Grill on New Year’s Eve 2024 after he refused to leave a woman alone—he faces counts of aggravated assault, assault, and unlawful possession of a weapon. WVLT 8
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Tennessee Valley Fair opened on Friday in Chilhowee Park where rides, live music, competitions, food & cultural displays have attracted many visitors. The fair will run until Sept. 14 and requires all guests to follow a strict bag policy and code of conduct. WVLT 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Tennessee Department of Human Services lost federal dollars that help pay the Child Care Fund—reducing the state budget for this fiscal year and cutting funds for training programs for future educators. Child care professionals say the change may lead to fewer new teachers in East Tennessee and make it harder for families to get quality care. WVLT 8
- ➤ UT leaders broke ground on a new Chemistry Building that cost $165.5 million—marking the largest investment ever for higher education by the state. 10 News
- ➤ The University of Tennessee reported record first-year retention and enrollment this fall with over 92% of first-year students returning for sophomore year and 40,421 students enrolled, while nearly 63,000 first-year applications were received. The university credits its student success programs and strategic enrollment plan for rising graduation rates over four, five, and six years—marking a milestone for UT. WVLT 8
- ➤ Since school started on August 7, Knox County Schools recorded 977 cell phone policy violations that nearly double the totals from previous school years. Carly Harrington said the surge comes after the district enforced a stricter rule requiring students to turn off their cell phones & use them only for emergencies. WVLT 8
