  • BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee laid off nearly 100 employees and cut dozens of other jobs to handle financial losses that have affected many health insurers—company officials said these decisions were necessary.  WVLT 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new law (Tennessee Code Ann. § 49-6-1016) will require every public and charter school student to learn firearm safety starting in the 2025-2026 school year; classes will cover safe storage, what to do if a firearm is found, and proper actions without discussing gun rights or using live ammunition.  6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center are urging Knoxville residents to get their COVID-19 and flu vaccines as they prepare for rising respiratory illnesses this fall season—medical experts say the vaccines help prevent severe illness and reduce hospital visits.  6 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a 72-17 win over ETSU, Tennessee Volunteers drew national attention as ESPN's College GameDay will visit Knoxville for a planned SEC clash with the Georgia Bulldogs. The game is set for Saturday, September 13th at 3:30 p.m. at Neyland Stadium — both teams remain undefeated heading into the matchup.  10 News
  • The 22nd ranked Volunteers won 45—26 against Syracuse in Atlanta last weekend and will host ETSU for their home opener at Neyland Stadium. The team aims to extend its home unbeaten streak to nine games and improve its record to 21—1 in the last 22 matchups.  WVLT 8
  • On September 6, Tennessee fans gathered for tailgating near Neyland Stadium before the home opener against ETSU—many enjoyed dancing, food, and group photos as they celebrated the game.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • Kevin Hart was seen talking with head Coach Josh Heupel at Neyland Stadium during the Vols’ first game on Saturday, September 6—captured on video by Sam Rothman. His son Hendrix Hart—a senior from Sierra Canyon School—is being recruited by Tennessee’s track team as the game against East Tennessee State unfolded.  6 News
