COMMUNITY NEWS

  • By Dec. 1, Claxton Kids Palace Playground, which has served the local community for over 25 years, will be torn down as its easement with TVA ends and a new park will be built using a $250,000 fund from TVA. Anderson County will ask the community for input on the new park’s features—options include splash pads and community centers.  WVLT 8
  • Emerald Youth Foundation held an open house Sept. 9 at the Haslam-Sansom Ministry Complex in Lonsdale to present plans for a new East Knoxville complex that would serve local youth. The nonprofit aims to buy 12.7 acres of Chilhowee Park and start construction after obtaining City Council approval on Sept. 30—details include athletic fields, a health clinic, and classrooms.  Knoxville News Sentinel
  • John T. O’Connor Senior Center is hosting events for National Senior Center Month and will hold the Annual Health Fair 'Fall into Good Health' on Sept 19 at 9:00 a.m.—the fair will offer seniors community resources like a flu shot clinic and balance screening.  WVLT 8

  • J.C. Holdway — on Union Avenue — was named one of the 50 best restaurants in the U.S. by the New York Times; owner Joseph Lenn said the honor celebrated the restaurant’s 9th anniversary and recognized the hard work of his team and local farmers.  10 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Knoxville mother and son team, Felecia Outsey and Ray Pettway, use art and dance to teach cultural history and will hold an event on Sept 21 at The Box Lot on Magnolia Ave that honors Afro, Indigenous and Caribbean roots — the event will include yoga at 9 a.m., a drum circle, food truck offerings, and a 6 p.m. showcase.  10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new Tennessee law requires all children, including kindergartners, to learn basic gun safety in school—this rule went into effect at the start of the school year. Knox County, Maryville City and Sevier County Schools are preparing lessons and teacher training—official plans are underway.  WVLT 8

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Winnie—a Labrador trained by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture—took part in a media demonstration at Ijams Nature Center on August 12 in Knoxville, sniffing for spotted lanternflies that can harm agriculture. No lanternflies were found during the demonstration.  Knoxville News Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews at Oak Ridge National Laboratory finished knocking down Building 3003, a contaminated structure linked to the Manhattan Project, using a ramp from the former reactor area—this cleared 10,000 square feet for future demolition work and improved access for visitors.  WVLT 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • KARM and Remote Area Medical — longtime partners — hosted their biannual Vision Clinic on Wednesday in Knoxville. The free event provided vision and medical care to those in need.  WVLT 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Tennessee announced its 2026 SEC schedule for the Lady Vols softball team—opening conference play at home against the LSU Tigers on March 6. The full schedule will be released later this fall.  WVLT 8
