COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds of Army and Air Force ROTC cadets are climbing a memorial stair course to honor first responders who saved lives at the World Trade Center towers on 9/11 — a tribute that underscores the impact of their heroism.  10 News
  • K-9 rescue crews from Bedford, Moore and Franklin counties held a training session in Shelbyville where first responders explained how scent kits can help find missing people with autism, dementia and Alzheimer’s faster by giving dogs a personal scent to track. The kits include a glass jar with a scent pad and a flash drive with key details that save 15—20 minutes during searches.  WVLT 8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Knox County Forensic Center reported that motor vehicle deaths in Knox and Anderson counties dropped to 64 this past year from 87 last year—showing a decline in fatalities.  10 News

CRIME NEWS

  • UT students held a candlelight vigil for Charlie Kirk—demonstrating their protest against political violence—as authorities continue to search for his alleged killer.  10 News
  • University of Tennessee students held a candlelight memorial on Thursday at the campus seal to honor Charlie Kirk after he was shot dead on Wednesday—some said his loss could inspire others to stand up for their beliefs.  10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park is open but many trails, roads & historic structures still need repair after severe damage from Helene nearly a year ago. Crews are balancing emergency repairs & routine maintenance and plan to complete work in Cataloochee in 2026 with total costs estimated in tens of millions.  Knoxville News Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Knoxville says the repairs on the 127-year-old Gay Street Bridge are mostly complete and the bridge will reopen to pedestrians and cyclists by December 31—final repairs will be made this fall by contractor Blalock & Sons. The city also plans to narrow the entrance, remove turn lanes and add landscaping to create a plaza—public input will help shape the final design.  6 News

  • On September 11, Dawson Sutton raced in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Bristol Motor Speedway in a custom truck featuring UT orange and white and Volunteer branding—sponsored by UT Athletics and Rackley Roofing.  WVLT 8
  • Alcoa shut out West 35-0 — the Tornadoes scored 28 first-half points and held a dominant lead throughout the game.  WVLT 8
  • The Knoxville Smokies ended their last home game at Covenant Health Park and now travel to play the Montgomery Biscuits — local business owners in Old City say that changes to parking and street closures have eased traffic problems. The team hosted an Old City night during its final homestand, and new restaurants and shops will open next season to help boost the area.  10 News
  • The 15th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers will host the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs at Neyland Stadium tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.—trying to break a losing streak that began in 2016—and they come off a 72 to 17 win over ETSU while Georgia relies on dual-threat quarterback Gunner Stockton.  10 News
  • Heritage quarterback Madden McNeil earned Week 3 Player of the Week honors after throwing for 225 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-14 win over South Doyle, and Loudon linebacker Nolan Bassett was recognized for picking off three passes in a 15-9 comeback win over Kingston—Heritage will host Anderson County at 7 p.m. and Loudon will play at Hixson in upcoming games.  10 News
